Moderate Tourism Season: Touring Advice for September

September is in a moderate tourism season. Schools and universities are in session by the end of August in Norway and many other countries. The increasing darkness and cooler weather also keeps the heavy tourist crowds away.

So prices moderate, and Norway becomes more peaceful. The longer nights begin the season of aurora sightings in the north such as at Tromsø near the Arctic Circle. You can enjoy outdoor activities in the long twilight hours, find a restaurant, and stroll in the cities, countryside and wilderness.

You can often find lower prices for flights and accommodations and more availability. September is a month to see the fjords when prices and crowds moderate and there are still mild temperatures.

In Tromsø, close to the Arctic Circle, the beginning of September has a little more than 15 hours of daylight. If you want to go to a place with more sunshine, then Longyearbyen (on the island of Svalbard well north of mainland Norway) is a place to go with more than 18 hours of sunshine at the beginning of the month.
There are no national holidays in September.

What to Wear in September

In September, the tourist areas in the Arctic Circle have unpredictable weather, and there is snowfall at times. You can be the most comfortable by dressing in layers and bringing raingear wherever you go in Norway. Bring a coat and keep watch on the weather forecasts.

Here is a packing list for a few essentials in Norway:
