In August, almost the whole of Norway at the low elevations has mild temperatures during the day, cool temperatures at night, and moderate rainfall. 1. Oslo — Experience Its Nature and Visit Its Highlights When the Weather is Finest
The capital has an average daily high of 21°C (70°F) in August and 15½ hours of daylight on average. Many days have warm temperatures, and the average 7 hours of daily sunshine and 70% humidity make you feel warm too. The average low is 11°C (52°F).
August has combination of light and warmth for pleasant touring of the Oslo area. You could visit the Viking Ship Museum or learn about history at the Museum of Oslo. The Oslo Jazz Festival is held in the second week of August.
There is much light for sightseeing and being outdoors. August 1 has almost 17 hours of daylight and the rest of the time is twilight. August 30 has about 3½ hours of night. Oslofjord is a large fjord you could see with a boat tour of Oslo and the nearby countryside.

Bodø is a town of 50,000 just inside the Arctic Circle at latitude 67°. It is the European Capital of Culture in 2024. In August, Bodø has an average daily high of 15°C (59°F) that feels warm under the average 8 hours of daily sunshine. The weather is good for the outdoors and touring.
August is a good time to visit since it is the second warmest month of the year. The rainfall is moderate to low, so rain probably won't dampen your activities much. About 100,000 people hike to the top of adjacent Mount Keiservarden to see the town and Lofoten islands.
In August, there are 19 hours of daylight at the beginning of the month and 15 hours at the end. There is twilight that provides light for the outdoors, but no hours of night! There are many places to hike and see the arctic nature such as Svartisen Glacier.
3. Lofoten Islands — Enjoy Relaxing in Sunny Arctic Fishing Villages, Arctic Wilderness, and Basking on a Beach?
Lofoten is a group of islands in an archipelago about 3 hours north of Bodø by ferry. You could visit the islands and experience hiking in pristine arctic beauty while the weather is warm. There are amazing beaches and some sunny days in August. You can try basking on a beach.
Your chance of sunbathing weather is highest at the beginning of the month when the average high is 15°C (60°F). The weather is similar to that of Bodø. You could stay in fishing villages and perhaps rent a fisherman's cabin. In the fishing villages, you can eat a meal from the local fresh catch.
The islands are known for amazing hiking paths. You could use the 24 hours of daylight and twilight for long walks and sightseeing.
4. Alta — Hike and Enjoy the Culture in One of the Northernmost Big Towns
Alta is slightly more northerly than Tromsø at latitude 69.9°. Like Tromsø, Alta is known as a place to experience Sami (Lapp) culture. The daylight lasts 21 hours a day in the beginning of August and about 16 hours at the end of August.
Highlights to see include Alta Canyon, the largest canyon in Northern Europe, and to the north, North Cape (Nordkapp) is considered the northernmost point of Europe. It is a good place for exotic arctic hiking so close to the arctic circle.
Alta has an airport and good hotels. There is a market area called Bossekop for getting unique souvenirs and products. Since there is low rainfall, moderate and mild daily average highs of 16°C (61°F) and lows of 10°C (49°F), you might enjoy sleeping in a campground along the river.
Crowds and Costs for Traveling in August
August is one of Norway's busiest months for tourism, and it is the second warmest month. In the arctic circle, there is never night in August, and so going to the far north is an option for pristine exotic scenery, lighted colorful skies, and even culture and entertainment.
The northern towns, Tromsø and Bodø, are known for being cultural centers. These and other popular tourist highlights are the most congested in July and August.
The popular fjords are especially congested, so you might want to see them at the end of August when the number of tourists is less. School and university terms begin in the middle of August in Norway.
You might want to travel away from the busiest tourism areas by exploring Lapland and the Arctic Circle when the weather is the best in August. It's best to book accommodation months in advance for touring.
There are no national holidays in August.

August has unpredictable weather with moderate to high rainfall over most of the country. You can be the most comfortable by dressing in layers. You could wear summer clothes such as T-shirts and shorts even in the arctic circle. Bring a coat and keep watch on the weather reports though.
