1. Stockholm — Experience the Urban Highlights, History, and the Outdoors

Stockholm is the capital and the biggest city. It is on a little archipelago of 3,000 small islands. You can use the warm weather and almost continual light to swim, hike, kayak, boat, and fish at the numerous beaches and lagoons.

Tyresta National Park and the Nacka Reserve are two easily accessible nature preserves with trails and forests. These are good places to gaze at the eerie skies and glowing clouds in the hush of the long twilight around midnight.

In the city, great museums include the Vasa Museum that has a complete ship from the 1600s. The weather is good for walking around and sightseeing the Old Town too. The daily highs are 22°C (72°F), the lows are 13°C (55°F), and rainfall is low on average in July.

2. Visby — Enjoy a Big Island's Beaches, Nature, and Historic Places

Visby is a popular tourist town on Gotland Island that is off the eastern coast of Sweden and south of Stockholm. It is a small town that is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. There is a mixture of Swedish and German architecture and culture.

The big island has a population of about 60,000. It is a popular summer retreat for Swedes. There are sandy beaches where you can bask and enjoy some of the average 10 hours of sunshine and 18 hours of daylight. It is warm with average daily highs of 22°C (72°F), and the amount of rain is low. The nights are pleasant for sleeping as lows are around 13°C (55°F).

There is good local produce to enjoy, nature reserves to hike in, nearby small islands for excursions, and Viking history that you can learn about at Gotland Museum. The medieval town wall is preserved well.

3. Abisko — Pristine Arctic Nature, Rivers, and Hiking Trails

Abisko National Park is near Norway and can be an excursion from Kiruna. You could hike along Sweden's largest alpine lake there and also experience the amazing clarity of the skies that will help you experience the twilight and sunset colors. Unless it is cloudy, it is never really dark.

During the winters, people go to Abisko to watch the auroras, because the skies are so clear that it is considered the best place in the world for aurora watching. You could visit Abisko Canyon easily from the tiny village of Abisko or walk along the Kungsleden (see below).

The weather is a little rainy, so bring rain gear. The average high is 14°C (57°F). The low is 7°C (45°F). It rains about 17 days each month on average for moderate total rainfall. There are hotels and restaurants in the village. You could dine on wild game or Sami reindeer.

4. Kungsleden — Enjoy Lapland Wilderness Hiking

July is high season for enjoying the wonders of the arctic, including nature and high mountains near Abisko. The nearby Kungsleden trail passes through high forests, by high snowcapped peaks, and arctic tundra. There are cabins and huts along the way for rest and shelter. The trail is 450 kilometers (280 miles) long.

The sun stays up until the 16th of July, and then you get bright twilight and violet dusk to light your way. The temperatures are higher than you'd expect too. An average of 8 hours of sunshine and continuous sun produces an average high of 19°C (66°F) in the nearby tourist town of Kiruna that could be your base for the hike. The nightly lows are 9°C (48°F).

For yet more daylight and the brightest sun in July, you could go further north to Tromsø or Alta. For more about these Norwegian tourist towns, see Norway Weather in July.

Peak Tourism Season: Touring Advice for July

Sweden's tourism booms in July: foreign travelers arrive for the warm summer and Swedes travel internally. So, prices are at their peak level, and you will find crowds at the popular destinations.

For example, Visby has an annual political debate festival week at the end of July. You might want to avoid Gotland Island on those dates due to unusually high prices and crowding. On the other hand, if you are interested in Swedish politics and culture, it is your opportunity.

With an average of 18 or more hours of warmth and daylight, you can see twice as much of Sweden's rugged island archipelagos composed of hundreds of thousands of islands, mountain chains, arctic wilderness, vast green original forests, glaciers, lakes, fortresses, and long hiking trails in scenic natural areas.

There are no national holidays in July.

What to Wear in July

Temperatures are usually comfortable in the south at low elevations when you are wearing light clothing such as trousers and long-sleeve shirts during the day. Both getting sunburn and mosquito and bug bites are problems in July. So, to avoid these, it is best to cover your skin with light clothing and a sunhat.

The bright sunshine might make you feel warm or hot, even in the far north. At times, heatwaves make the north warmer than the south. However, it gets cool when the sun is at its lowest. So, it is best to bring along a coat, especially if you are planning on hiking in the north or mountains.

Sweden has low rainfall compared to most other European countries. July and August are the rainiest months. So, bring raingear or an umbrella as well. The mountains have unpredictable weather, so stay abreast of weather reports in the mountains.

The sea is too cold to swim in comfortably without a wetsuit. For example, the average maximum seawater temperature at Visby is 22°C (72°F). However, many ponds and small lakes are comfortable for swimming.

Here is a packing list for a few essentials in Sweden:

  • Waterproof hiking boots with good traction for hikes and being outdoors. You might wear them in-flight to travel lightly.
  • Comfortable shoes with good traction
  • Rain gear
  • Warm hat
  • Sunhat
  • Mosquito net and mosquito repellant
  • Some light clothing
  • Swimwear for spas and hot springs and lakes
  • Cardigans or fleece jackets especially for mountains and north
  • Polarized glasses
