Displays of Las Fallas

During the festival, the streets and squares of the city are filled with figures known as ninots (groups of fallas models making up a scene).

The fallas (satirical sculptures) are made of wood, cardboard, and foam, and have various themes. There are animals and flowers as fallas, but the most common fallas are cartoon-style characters and public figures. The largest fallas can reach a height of over 20 meters.

Burning Fallas

On the final night of the festival, on March 19th, 2025, the Fallas will be burned. The ceremony usually takes place on streets or other open spaces.

Huge crowds gather in the streets to witness this ceremony. When the towering figures on top collapse, the crowds burst into applause. When an entire falla is engulfed in flames, revealing its skeleton in the red glow of the fire, people cheer, dance, and fireworks are set off to celebrate this moment.

This practice symbolizes sending away the old and welcoming the new. This festival is, in essence, to welcome spring.

Colorful Parades and Flowers Offerings

Girls and ladies are dressed in splendidly elegant and dazzling medieval traditional costumes. They carry flowers and walk from their community to the Plaza de la Virgen for a flower offering to Virgen de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Forsaken, i.e. the Virgin Mary), the patron saint of Valencia. Music is also played by bands during the parade.

At the Plaza de la Virgen, a large image of the Virgin Mary, constructed with fresh flowers, awaits. Thousands of bouquets of white, pink, yellow, and red flowers form the Virgin's gown, creating a solemn and majestic scene.

According to tradition, this action of offering flowers to the Virgin Mary is believed to bring peace and happiness for the year.
