If you cannot tolerate hot, dry weather, then this month is not for you. July and August are considered to be the hottest months in Jordan. Hot doesn't automatically mean bad though! If you can tolerate high temperatures, and by high we mean very HIGH temperatures then this month is perfect to catch the sun in all its glory. The key to making the most of your visit is to race against the sun and start the day as early as possible then plan indoor activities to avoid sun mid-day, when it is at its peak. An added advantage of visiting Jordan in July is that high summer heat makes it unfavorable for most tourists and so you can explore all the major attractions without having to deal with large crowds and long queues. Amman
You can catch the best temperatures on the northern side of the country where the temperature hovers at 30°C during the day and drops further with the setting sun. Amman is home to many popular archaeological sites like The Citadel, Roman Theatre and The Cave of The Seven Sleepers (Ashab al Kahf).
If you choose to stay indoors to avoid the sun, Amman has several indoor places to visit from malls to museums. The Royal Automobile Museum is popular among people of all ages and not just car enthusiasts since it houses a fine collection of classic cars from Cadillacs to Rolls Royces. The Jordan Museum offers panoramic insights into Jordan's history and culture. If you are interested in religious tourism, The Cave of Seven Sleepers might be the perfect place to visit in Amman. The cave is mentioned both in the Bible (Sleepers of Ephesus) and the Quran (Ashab al Kahf) and is popular among tourists because of the legends associated with it.
An added advantage of starting at Amman is that you can travel to Petra and Wadi Rum from there and catch it at night when the temperatures begin to cool down with the setting sun.
Petra
One cannot miss Petra while visiting Jordan and while the sweltering heat of July may fill you with doubt, and rightly so, visiting Petra in July can have its own advantages if you know how to navigate your way around the sun. We cannot emphasize this point enough, staying hydrated and coming prepared is the key to exploring Petra successfully in July.
Know your temperatures. Check the weather forecast. Check with locals. Wear light-weight clothing. Start exploring Petra at the earliest, the majestic rock formations and structures change moods as the sun dances across the sky. It comes to life with its everchanging color tones and hues appearing throughout the landscape but the real show begins as the sun disappears into the night and the stars open their eyes.
In July and August, you can catch the Perseid meteor shower, an annual celestial event that might just take your breath away.
The lesser-known culinary activities in Petra can also come in handy when visiting in July, you can prepare your own meal under the guidance of professional chefs at Petra Kitchen, in Wadi Musa. It offers nightly classes and a multi-night cooking course that includes food sourcing at local markets, allowing you to experience the culture of Jordan up-close.
Wadi-Rum
Wadi-Rum, the valley of the moon transforms into a magical place as darkness peels away the golden veil of the sun and stars come up. July is a good month to visit Wadi-Rum as stars gear up to put up the aforementioned celestial show; the Perseid meteor shower. You can visit the Sky Gate Observatory, in Wadi Rum that allows you to witness the magical phenomenon away from all the lights and pollution.
You can also take the famous jeep-ride tour followed by overnight stargazing and food in a cave. Even though July is one of the hottest months to visit Jordan, the dry weather and pleasant evening breeze make up for the merciless daytime temperatures.
Dead Sea
July is one of the hottest months to visit the Dead Sea, however if you have already decided to visit Jordan in July and you can tolerate high temperatures, there is no reason to avoid the Dead Sea. Any trip to Jordan is incomplete without exploring the crystal studded Dead Sea.
July may be the worst and best time to visit the Dead Sea, on one hand the scorching heat of the sun will keep challenging you throughout the day, on the other hand you might just be able to catch it absolutely tourist-free. The temperature in the water is cooler than on land, so with enough sun-protective gear, you may be able to lay back and float in solitude in the Dead Sea. You can also visit the Dead Sea close to sunset, when the heat begins to die down and the landscape explodes with tints and hues of oranges and pinks. It should be noted that Aqaba and Dead Sea are the hottest places to visit in July in Jordan.
About 30 minutes away from the Dead Sea is Wadi Mujib, where you can explore the Siq Trail and experience the salty water in the shade of giant rocks and mountains. Hiking through a canyon full of water is bound to leave you with life-long memories.
Costs and Crowd in July
Most tourists avoid Jordan in summer, particularly in July when the summer heat peaks, as a result, popular sites packed with tourists are less crowded and even deserted. Consequently, businesses and places that run on tourist-trade are shut down for low season.
For budget travelers, visiting in July can be an excellent opportunity to save on hotel costs and transportation fares. Air-tickets are also cheaper in July.
Events in July
Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts: typically takes place in July every year. It is a month-long event that showcases a diverse range of cultural performances and activities in the ancient city of Jerash, hence the name. It is a vibrant celebration of music, dance, theater, and art, drawing visitors from all over the world to experience the rich cultural heritage of Jordan. Venues include the spectacular Roman ruins.
What to Pack in July?
Pack lightweight modest clothing and modest swimwear when visiting in July. A good quality sunscreen, comfortable footwear for hiking and for the beaches because while the temperatures get cooler in water the sand can get baking hot under the scorching heat of the sun. A wide brimmed hat and even an umbrella to provide shelter from the sun can come in handy too.
Make sure to check local weather advisories when visiting any place during extreme weathers, a quick look at the weather forecast can help you navigate through the day while avoiding the merciless sun and minimize the possibility of any unpleasant events.
The key to enjoying your trip to Jordan in July with all that summer heat is preparation. Know your destination, a quick search on what to wear and where to go can come in handy. Remember, in summers staying hydrated, starting your day early and avoiding the sweltering heat of the mid-day sun are the three simple measures that can save your trip.
