The year 2025 is designated as a full Kumbh Mela. The last full Kumbh Mela took place in 2013, attracting the largest religious gathering in the world with nearly 120 million visitors.

Why Is Kumbh Mela Held Every 12 Years?

The full Kumbh Mela is organized every 12 years to mark the completion of one revolution of the planet Jupiter.

Jupiter is considered to be a symbol of wisdom in Hindu astrology. The moment when Jupiter completes one revolution is believed to be the most auspicious time, and taking a dip in holy water during this period is considered to be highly blessed.

How Are the Dates of Kumbh Mela Determined?

The date of Kumbh Mela is based on the lunar calendar and the position of Jupiter and the moon.

Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is held in the 11th month of the Hindu calendar (Magh), i.e January/February. Specifically, the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela takes place under the following conditions:

• Jupiter is in Aries, and the sun and moon are in Capricorn.
• Alternatively, when Jupiter is in Taurus and the sun is in Capricorn.

These astrological conditions are considered the most auspicious for conducting Kumbh Mela.
