1. Reykjavík — Visit the Highlights of Culture and Nature
Reykjavík is an unusually interesting capital. In 2021, a long dormant volcano erupted in fiery explosions near Reykjavík. Volcanoes have flowed occasionally since then. In the second half of 2024, the next eruption is predicted near the town of Grindavík that is about 40 minutes away and near the airport.
There are 6 hours of sunshine on average to highlight the natural wonders and the capital. On June 16th and 17th, there are parades and celebrations in Reykjavík in the continual light. There is an average daily high of 13°C (55°F) and a low of 7°C (45°F). The rainfall is low.
Reykjavík gets only 3 hours of twilight around midnight, and if you wish, you could go for midnight sightseeing under the beautiful twilight skies at Thingvellir National Park that is near the city. Öxaráfoss is a big waterfall there amid wildflowers and green landscapes in June.
2. Húsavík — See the Whales in Whale Watching Season and the Midnight Sun
Only the northernmost towns and villages in Iceland experience the midnight sun. Of all the northernmost places to go, Húsavík is the most comfortable and is closest to some of the best of northern Iceland's natural highlights: Dettifoss Waterfall, bigger than any in Europe, the big whales, and Asbyrgi Canyon.
Dettifoss is 44 meters (144 feet) tall. It is about 1 hour 40 minutes from Húsavík. Asbyrgi Canyon is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of Húsavík. It is a less visited area for solitude, hikes, and midnight walks. A rare natural forest of birch and willow is in the canyon.
Húsavík is the Whale Watching Capital. June is one of the best months to see big whales. There is so much light and mineral-rich snowmelt that feeds the sea life that the big whales eat. You can stay in town and ride boats to see them when the weather is good.
3. Höfn — Enjoy Walking on a Huge Glacier in Warmer Weather, Eat Seafood, and Go to the Hot Springs
Höfn is famed for seafood and the huge glacier nearby that is bigger than any in Western Europe. It measures about 8,000 sq km (3,127 sq miles). As you hike on it, you might see blue ice caves, light-blue ice peaks, and other ice topography.
The Jökulsárlón Lake area is about 70 minutes from Höfn. Ice floats in the blue lake. Even in June, the temperatures only reach an average high of 11°C (52°F) and a low of 6°C (43°F). To warm up, the Hoffel Hot Tubs are about 25 minutes from Höfn.
June is high tourism season in Höfn. It becomes busier in the middle of June. The weather is suitable for touring and hiking in the icy outdoors since there is moderate rainfall. An average of 5 hours of daily sunshine help to warm you on the ice.
4. North Iceland Hiking — Enjoy Hiking Under the Continual Sun Near Akureyri and Húsavík
In the far north of Iceland north of Akureyri, the weather for hiking is good in June with full continual daylight starting in June 12 or so and ending in the first part of July and warmer temperatures. For seeing amazing colorful highlights of twilight and full daylight, go north.
The lakeside trails conveniently near Húsavík are a popular hiking option, especially for those interested in birds, because there are a lot of birds in summer. At the lakes of Kaldbakstjarnir that are south of Húsavík and at Lake Botnsvatn, you can see many species including the Red Breasted Merganser.
A good place to hike 3 hours east of Akureyri was discovered by hikers about 2018. A dam stopped the river that flowed through Stuðlagil Canyon in 2016. That canyon is Iceland's deepest. It's notable for huge formations of long curvy and straight basalt columns.
High Tourism Season: Touring Advice for June
June might be the best month to visit Iceland since the days are longest and the temperatures reach almost the highest of the year, but tourism is less congested in June than in July and August.
Schools and universities in Europe begin their summer vacations in June. More tourists arrive in Iceland near and after the summer solstice, June 21, for the warmer summer and continual light.
June affords rich blooming greenery, rivers and waterfalls roaring with snowmelt, mild weather, much daylight, and twilight colors or midnight sunshine at more moderate prices than in July and August.
The scenery in June is quite a contrast to the stark and icy landscapes of the snowy months. Attractive wildflowers and green plants add color and beautify the usually stark, bare and icy scenery that you would see most of the year.
If you go to usually crowded places such as the favorite hot springs or thermal pools, you have fewer tourists visiting.
Summer solstice daylight:
Many people want to experience the midnight sun, but you can do so for a little more than two weeks around the time of the summer solstice about June 21 at about the latitude of Húsavík.
Akureyri is only a little further south, but it gets about half an hour of twilight during the solstice at midnight.
Southern Iceland gets about 3 hours of twilight on the solstice.
For more days of continual daylight in June than available in Húsavík, you could go further north to Tromsø or Alta in Norway. For more about these areas, see Norway Weather in July.
Public holidays in June:
Sometimes, the Pentecost holidays that are the last days of the Easter season are in June. The Pentecost holidays are in June in 2025. When they occur, there is a rise in tourism, travel, and prices.
- Whit Sunday (Pentecost) and Whit Monday are June 8, 2025 and June 9, 2025, respectively. Schools and most businesses close. Pentecost is 10 days after Ascension Day and always falls on a Sunday. Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus' followers in Jerusalem.
- Icelandic Republic Day is June 17 annually. Schools and most businesses close, meaning more domestic tourism. It commemorates Iceland becoming independent of Denmark in 1944.
What to Wear in June
