The Best Places to Visit in Finland in July

Finland's mid-summer month of July is a great time of the year to visit, with mildest temperatures and even a chance of a warm day, particularly in the south of the country. As a result, we would recommend visiting in July if you're interested in seeing Finland's beautiful nature in summer, or if you're looking to swim or enjoy hikes outdoors.

We suggest visiting Helsinki, and from there traveling to Turku, Savolinna, and Rovaniemi. If you want some guidance on how to spend your days in Finland, and want to get tour guide services and transportation between the different cities, reach out to us. Global Highlights' experts can help you tailor your ideal trip to Finland at any point in the year! Let us plan your trip to Finland.

1. Visit Helsinki's Most Famous Sights

The capital city of Finland, Helsinki, has a lot to offer regardless of what kind of sightseeing you enjoy. Starting off with the famous Senate Square (read more about this on Finland in June), where you'll find some of Finland's most important buildings across the spiritual, government, and historical spheres, you'll also have to check out the beautiful cathedrals (more about this on Finland in January).

Helsinki is also home to a beautiful sea fortress, Suomenlinna, where you'll find defensive buildings, barracks, and bastions fit for all history buffs. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and we've explained a little more in our piece about visiting Finland in February.

For visitors with a keen eye for architecture, the Töölönlahti area is home to impressive buildings like Finlandia Hall, the Parliament House, and the Temppeliaukio Rock Church, a church which was originally constructed underground, inside natural bedrock, back in 1969. You can read more about what else to see across Helsinki in our article about visiting Finland in May.

Finally, we would suggest trying some typical Finnish dishes, like salmon soup, or reindeer meat, at one of the many hip restaurants in Helsinki. The Helsinki Old Market Hall is a good place to start, with stalls offering up some local delicacies and shops selling souvenirs and traditional Finnish products. The hall closes at 6pm daily, so we suggest going for lunch or an early dinner.

2. Enjoy a Steamship Cruise around Turku

Turku, located just under 2 hours from Helsinki by train or by car, is a popular stop on tourist itineraries, and we highly suggest a visit if you are coming to Finland in the summer month of July. The city is on the water, surrounded by lakes and rivers coming from the ocean past lots of bays.

Here, you can take a multitude of boat tours, including a steamship cruise, with or without other stops. There are options to go to Naantali, a resort town that is really popular during the summer, found amongst the beautiful islands that make up the surrounding archipelago. Some of the boats let you get off and go for a walk around. Global Highlights can help you plan tour boat tour however you prefer.

Other options include taking a sail boat, or going on a smaller private boat to partake in some water sports. There are options to rent a jet ski, or go kayaking. Regardless of how much you love an adrenaline rush, there's an option for every visitor in every age category. And the bonus here is that all of this takes place in front of the most gorgeous natural scenery.

3. Explore Olavinlinna Castle in Savonlinna

Towards the east of Finland, you'll find Savonlinna in the heart of the Saimaa Lakeland. The city is known for its medieval Olavinlinna Castle (also sometimes known as St. Olaf's Castle), which was built in 1475 to control the border between what was then the Kingdom of Sweden and Russia.

The castle is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing, and is worth visiting for the interesting history of the castle and the region. There you will find a bastion, a bell tower, and a church tower, as well as some historied ruins of other parts of the castle. Signs point the way and give important historical background context.

The area around Olavinlinna Castle is also gorgeous and worth going for a walk around. Other attractions in the area include Karimäki Church, the world's largest wooden church. There's also a shop there with some local crafts, that gives some insights into the local population.

4. Hike Under the Midnight Sun in Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is located so far north that the sun shines there almost all of the "night" in July. This makes it the perfect location for something you would not be able to do in most other cities or countries: hiking (or simply strolling around) under the midnight sun.

There are lots of great trails in Rovaniemi, including the Kätkävaara walking path, which goes past the Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve, the strictest large nature reserve in Europe, which you can't enter due to scientific research and for conservation purposes. The nature in this region is really diverse, with lots of animals and birds in the area. The path also goes past some caves, which are beautiful to see.

It is also possible to go rainbow trout fishing in this area, which we recommend you do with a tour guide to ensure you have the right equipment and that you adhere to local fishing regulations.

High Season: More Expensive and More Crowded

July falls in Finland's high season, with higher temperatures and pleasant weather throughout the country. Accommodation and transportation might be more expensive during this time of the year, so it's worth looking at booking further ahead of time.

What to Wear in July

July's summer weather is relatively mild in Finland, and we suggest bringing a mixture of clothes to ensure that you're covered on the chance of a warm day, and on the chance of a cooler day. It is still worth bringing a coat just in case too, because you don't want to be caught out.

Given that there are long hours of sunshine in the country in July, particularly towards the north of Finland, we suggest bringing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself, as you might spend a long time outdoors exploring.
